Listing Description

Constitution Hill Women’s Gaol is a former prison in Johannesburg built in 1910. It housed both ordinary and political female prisoners during the colonial and apartheid eras, including prominent activists. Today, the preserved building forms part of Constitution Hill’s living museum, using exhibitions, architecture and historical stories to explore women’s experiences of imprisonment, discrimination and South Africa’s journey toward democracy.
